Vodafone Q1 2012/2013 results: Not quite as bad as it seems

Vodafone Europe’s June quarter service revenue growth contracted sharply to -1.6% from -0.2% in the previous quarter

Given various one-off factors, and a likely continued macroeconomic driven slowdown, we expect that Vodafone’s underlying competitive performance is unchanged

The outlook is still poor, with macroeconomic and regulatory headwinds joined by a self-inflicted problem in Spain. Cost control at least appears to be going well, with slowing smartphone sales growth keeping handset costs under control

4G in the UK : Advantage EE

A number of developments over the summer have, at least in theory, made the UK 4G mobile spectrum outlook a lot clearer: in July Ofcom issued its final policy statement regarding the 800MHz and 2.6GHz ‘4G’ auctions, in August it decided to allow Everything Everywhere (EE) to ‘refarm’ its 1800MHz spectrum for 4G use, and EE announced that it had sold 15MHz of its 1800MHz spectrum to H3G

Cable & Wireless Worldwide: Turnaround or acquisition, easier said than done

Cable & Wireless Worldwide’s new CEO Gavin Darby has outlined a turnaround strategy for a business which is not performing that badly in context, against the backdrop of Vodafone considering a bid to buy the company

Mr Darby’s strategy is yet to be finalised, but in outline contains lots of initiatives which are good in theory but hard to implement in practice, especially in a weak macroeconomic climate, in the face of intense competition

Carphone Warehouse March quarter results: Prepay declines continue to weigh

CPW’s key operating metrics worsened again in the March quarter, with connection volume growth dropping to -19% and like-for-like revenue growth dropping to -5.5%

Weakness in the UK prepay market continued to affect CPW’s results, with volumes again down 30-40%, but contract sales did not mitigate this as much as last quarter, with growth in the UK but declines in continental Europe

EE charges a premium for 4G

EE announced its 4G pricing today, with the prices broadly set at a premium of around £5 a month to those of 3G services from Orange, T-Mobile, O2 and Vodafone

Perhaps more importantly, the pricing includes unlimited voice and text as standard, which pushes the minimum spend to £36 a month, a substantial uplift from current average contract values of £20-£25

European mobile market consolidation

The planned merger of Vodafone and H3G in Australia has raised the question of what consolidation could occur in Europe, although a direct analogy is not appropriate because Vodafone is much weaker in Australia (#3 operator) than it is in the larger European countries, and so would face much more regulatory scrutiny in Europe

European mobile revenue growth and outlook Q3 2012: Nadir not yet reached, can 4G help?

European mobile market service revenue growth dropped again in Q3, by 1.9ppts to -6.2%. This was not helped by a substantial increase in the MTR impact, driven by a big cut in Italy, but underlying revenue growth still fell by 1.3ppts In stark contrast to Europe, the US mobile market continues to grow apace, with there being over 10ppts between the growth rates of the two regions.

H3G 2010 results: improving to breakeven

H3G Europe improved its revenue growth and margins in 2010, albeit not by as much as its headline figures claimed. It is currently growing at 5% with EBIT at around breakeven

Given that its parent company is likely to want to keep EBIT positive, it is likely to be constrained on future investment in subscriber growth, limiting its potential going forward

H3G H1 2011 results: UK strengthens, Italy weakens

After strong underlying improvements in growth and profitability in 2010, in H1 2011 H3G Europe’s service revenue growth was steady at 3% and margins only slightly improved to (underlying) EBIT breakeven

In the UK, service revenue growth accelerated to 7% (from -1% in H2 2010), with EBIT maintained at about breakeven, as the UK company’s ongoing strong contract subscriber growth fed through

Italy suffered roughly the opposite fate, with service revenue growth falling to -8%, as its recent subscriber losses fed through, and EBIT remained firmly negative

Mobile data pricing in the UK: down but not out

The new consumer data tariffs from Vodafone and Orange in the UK continue the trend towards dramatically lower data prices for high end users, although they are cunningly structured to involve more moderate increases for low end users

Mobile market consolidation in the UK: value creative, but for whom?

Vodafone (and others) are reported to be interested in acquiring T-Mobile in the UK, but any such merger would be likely to face significant barriers from regulatory authorities

This achievement would be moderated by ‘integration leakage’, i.e. increased churn caused by customers leaving who were initially attracted by an aspect of one of the operators that disappears after integration, but the net result should still be positive for the JV
