UK Energy Crisis: Interdependence with Europe
12 September 2022Russia’s weaponisation of gas exports to the EU and resulting Continent-wide energy supply crisis also impacts the UK via rising prices on the wholesale market for this commodity
The UK’s imported gas supplies are mainly from the wellhead in Norway and look to be secure from interruption, despite higher demand from EU Member States
The UK is implementing a vast two-year subsidy programme worth c.£150 billion to cushion households and blunt the advance of recession
Hopes pinned on price rises: European mobile in Q2 2022
9 September 2022European mobile service revenue growth increased by 1ppt to +1.6% this quarter, with this improvement largely driven by higher-than-inflation price increases in the UK.
The outlook for Q3 is mixed with an increased roaming boost expected, but the B2B sector will remain challenging and the impact of the rollout of out-of-contract notifications in EU countries will mount.
There are signs of some upward pricing movement beyond the UK, particularly in Spain as the operators seek to cushion the blow of rising costs and inevitable economic pressure.
Apple's announcement that the iPhone 14 will be eSIM-only in the US paves the way for it to ultimately enter the market for mobile services there, although that will require the co-operation of at least one mobile operator.
This should be a red flag for UK operators who have been obliged to facilitate a form of eSIMs already and are likely to be obliged to go a few steps further in the coming years.
Policymakers need to think very carefully about the pros and cons of such a move by Apple—the industry cannot afford to give Apple a slice of its much-called-upon pie.
“The BBC is an extraordinary story of long-term survival” , enthuses Claire Enders, at the head of Enders Analysis, a media research company. This ardent defender of the public audiovisual group, high priestess of media analysis across the Channel, believes that the Corporation is a pillar of democracy, with international repercussions. “Across the world, three-quarters of people don't have access to a free press. The world relies on a very small number of public services, including the BBC."
Alice Enders was quoted in Videoweek on “Nothing in the Pipeline” After France Scraps Licence Fee
6 September 2022Alice said “It’s not good. This was an implementation of a promise made by Macron in the course of this latest election cycle… a promise that was made by all the centre and centre-right candidates.”
Has this prompted much outrage from defenders of the licence fee? “No,” responds Enders. “Frankly not. It’s very hard to fight something because it was all packaged up as a measure to address the cost of living crisis.” Coupled with a socialist opposition “in disarray”, the government was effectively given carte blanche.
She added “The Senate amputated the funding to 2024, and the whole issue of the funding of the PSB becomes entirely the subject of executive action. This has the potential to stymie the kind of long-term decisions and multi-year commissions that can help make a broadcaster truly competitive. It does really hypothecate, to a considerable degree, the expenditure that can be made on programming."
Gareth Sutcliffe was quoted in The Times on "Microsoft is thinking outside the box"
6 September 2022Gareth said that Microsoft believed the console would soon be “irrelevant” and that the future would be subscription-based. Not everyone can afford or is interested in buying a device and then paying extra for expensive games.
He added that his deal was about excellent timing and price. An investigation into Activision’s alleged history of employee abuse and harassment has resulted in numerous lawsuits. “Activision was a distressed asset when [Microsoft] made the offer, in terms of management and toxicity in its business practices which was damaging the brand,” he said. He said Microsoft thought it had got a bargain.
Julian Aquilina was quoted in CITY A.M on "BT and Warner complete sports streaming mega-deal"
5 September 2022Julian said a key consideration moving forward for the joint venture would be which brand will be at the forefront of this new combined offering.
He explained that whilst BT is a household name in the UK, “it may be difficult to keep the BT brand at the forefront given that the service is going to be integrated into the global operator."
Gill Hind was quoted in The Telegraph on "New BBC News chief walks into fresh rows over impartiality"
5 September 2022Gill said Turness will provide welcome reinforcements as the BBC navigates huge amounts of political pressure. “Deborah Turness coming will be helpful. She is hugely respected within the industry and was head and shoulders above everyone else for that role.”
She added “There is a lot riding on how she handles it over the next six months to a year because there is infighting at the BBC. They have pulled in a heavy hitter and it will be interesting if she can turn things around.”
