Douglas McCabe was quoted in an article about the potential sale of The Economist, following Nikkei's £844m acquisition of the FT Group from Pearson. The education group, Pearson, owns fifty percent of The Economist. Douglas said "In the context of an increasingly global battle between giants like Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, the New York Times and Dow Jones, the Nikkei-FT deal makes sense,” adding “Buying the FT means Nikkei becomes more of a global player.”

Toby Syfret was quoted in an article about the future of the BBC, as government ministers plan a review of the national broadcaster's size and activities. This comes following the announcement that the BBC will take the burden of the cost of free TV licenses for the over 75's. Toby said “This is really a savage attack on the BBC,” adding “We’ve got something very problematic on our hands.”

Toby Syfret was quoted in an article about TV viewing habits, as consumers head online in increasing numbers and advertisers are demanding hard figures on audiences. Toby said "One thing is clear — there is a need for change,” adding “People are saying, we need the data now".

Toby Syfret was quoted in an article about BT's plans to unveil television subscription packages, having previously bundled football games in free with high-speed broadband connections the announcement is expected to introduce a charge of £5 a month to watch the Champions League for existing customers. Toby said that BT’s football subscription package would “be a fairly unique thing”.

Alice Enders was quoted in an article about news that the BBC has sold £87m of property at its former television headquarters as it attempts to demonstrate commitment to reducing operating costs. Alice talked about plans for a progressive license fee, which would be graded by household income. She said it would be “a nightmare to enforce”, suggesting the alternative option would be “to widen the categories of those that are exempt”.

Toby Syfret was quoted in an article about fears from broadcasters of falling revenues as viewers switch to on-demand TV, with much of the focus being on the shift from 'linear' TV to on-demand services, such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer, seen among young people. However Toby said "the habits of the parents are changing too", with live TV viewing having fallen 11 per cent among adults aged 35 to 54 since 2010.

Thomas Caldecott was quoted in an article on The Sun's decision to end forty four years of Page 3 in print, instead making its photos of topless women only available online. This may be seen as an attempt by Murdoch's media empire to improve its image following the hacking scandal. However it also represents a move by The Sun to boost its digital subscription numbers, by adding topless women to its exclusively online mix the tabloid could attract more of its core audience. Thomas said "They clearly think it's going to have some positive effect.
